Trinidad: Five shot dead in 24 hours

(Trinidad Express) In the space of 24 hours, five people were shot dead in separate incidents across Trinidad and Tobago. They were identified as 44-year-old Marcus Williams; 42-year-old Kevin Hospedales; 43-year-old Ricky Roopnarine; 39-year-old Kendell Hodges; and Anthony Maryshow.

Williams, of San Fabien Road in Gasparillo, was fatally shot at about 7 p.m. on Friday at Dump Road off Forres Park in Claxton Bay.

He was liming near a wooden shack along the southern side of the road with a group of friends when two men walked out of a nearby track. On seeing the group, the suspects opened fire. The shooters fled the scene.

In the aftermath, Williams and two other men, aged 38 and 57, were shot. The police and paramedics were notified; however, Williams died at the scene.

The two injured men were taken to the Couva District Health Facility where they were treated. Both were stabilised and later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital for further treatment.

A team of officers from the Homicide Bureau and the Central Division led by Insp Stewart, Insp Maharaj, Sgt Francis, Sgt Smith and others responded.

Crime scene investigators recovered 12 spent 9mm cases at the scene, along with one live round of ammunition. Cpl Griffith is continuing investigations.

In an unrelated incident, Hospedales, aka “Scrapes” of Pope Avenue in Malabar, was fatally shot at about 9.15 p.m. on Friday. Residents of Pope Avenue told police they heard a series of loud explosions and upon investigating, they found Hospedales lying face down on the road in a pool of blood.

The police and paramedics were notified and a team of officers from the Arima Police Station responded.

They found Hospedales dead.

Crime scene investigators recovered 14 spent 9mm shells as well as four projectiles at the scene of the shooting. Police have no motive for Hospedales’ death.

PC Hardath is continuing enquiries. Roopnarine and Hodges were fatally shot at about 1 a.m. yesterday in Sangre Grande.

Roopnarine, also called “Shorley”, was from Coalmine, while Hodges was from Mulchan Street in Guaico.

According to police reports, at about 1 a.m. yesterday, a group of people were at a bar at Bliss Plaza, Eastern Main Road, when two armed men pulled up next to the building. The suspects opened fire on the group without warning.

Four people were shot, including two women aged 28 and 23.

The 23-year-old is a Venezuelan national. Roopnarine died at the scene. The other three injured men were taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital. Hodge was pronounced dead shortly after. The two women are in serious conditions at hospital. Crime scene investigators recovered 15 spent 9mm shells at the scene of the shooting.

And just before 9 a.m. yesterday Maryshow, aka “Rocky” was fatally shot near his home in Barataria.

Residents of Sixth Avenue North heard a series of loud explosions.

Upon investigating, they found Maryshow lying face down in a pool of blood near Tenth Street. Police and paramedics were notified and a team of officers from the North Eastern Division and the Homicide Bureau responded. Maryshow died on the scene.

The murder toll for the year so far stood at 213 up to last night compared to 225 at the same time last year.
