Petra U-14 football championship kicks off tomorrow

The 5th edition of the Petra Organisation-coordinated ExxonMobil U-14 Football Championship will kick off on Saturday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

The Boy’s division will commence the event at 10:00hrs as Bartica opposes L’Aventure and Three Miles tackles Volunteer Youth Corp. At 11:30hrs, Christ Church will take aim at St. John’s College, while East Ruimveldt faces off against Annandale and President’s College battles New Amsterdam at 13:00hrs. Carmel and Bush Lot will then take centre stage at 13:45hrs while Wismar/Christianburg matches skills with St. Joseph, and Dolphin opposes Patentia at 14:30hrs. School of the Nations will then match skills with Marian Academy at 15:45hrs, with Hope battling Charlestown, Chase Academy opposing Leonora, and South Ruimveldt engaging New Central at 16:30hrs.

In the final two matches, Santa Rosa tackles New Campbellville, and Waramuri faces off against Brickdam at 17:15hrs.

Meanwhile, the Girl’s Division will commence at 10:45hrs as Three Miles battles Eats Ruimveldt, Abram Zuil opposes New Central, and Charity tackles Marian Academy.

At 11:30hrs, Cotton Field faces off against West Minster, while Bartica battles Dolphin at 11:30hrs, and Santa Rosa opposes New Amsterdam at 12:15hrs. Tucville will then lock horns with New Campbellville while Annandale matches skills with Carmel at 13:45hrs.

This will be followed by defending champion Waramuri battling the Institute of Academy Excellence at 14:30hrs. In the final two matches, South Ruimveldt will oppose Christ Church, and President’s College will tackle West Ruimveldt at 15:45hrs. The boy’s category will see the 32 teams divided into eight groups of fours for the round-robin stage, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and subsequent final. The girl’s segment will see the 24 teams broken into six groups of four, followed by the subsequent knockout phases. Waramuri of Region #1 won the girl’s title, while Bartica won the boy’s division. The event will conclude on June 29th.

The games will feature 40-minute games (20-minute halves), while the knockout phases of the tournament will see 50-minute games. In the knockout segment, if the scores are tied at full-time, the teams will head straight to penalty kicks; however, in the semi-finals and final, extra time will be added if there is a deadlock between sides followed by the penalty kicks. The winner of the event will pocket $400,000 towards a school project and the corresponding trophy, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers will receive $200,000, $100,000, and $75,000 apiece towards a school initiative and the respective trophy. Individual accolades will also be presented to the Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer, and Best Goalkeeper for both divisions. Additionally, both MVP awardees will receive a year’s worth of educational support in the form of school supplies.
