Intolerable disrespect to the deceased

Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter from Mr. Robin Singh published in Saturday’s edition of your newspaper, captioned, “Why is the lorry driver still in custody?” I support the writer’s advocacy for the release of the lorry driver (surname, Ramdeen) who, judging from comments attached to social media reports, is portrayed as a person of good character.

However, I find it unpalatable to accept the tactless ferocity and insensitivity demonstrated by the said writer in parading a cruel character assassination as well as a display of wanton disrespect for the dead (surname, Gomes). Mr Singh, please help me understand the appropriateness of your choice of words like: “man who cared little for his life”; “glad the driver is no longer with us”; “a menace to society”; along with your arrogant smirk of “no apology”.

You made reference to the lorry driver as “an innocent hard working Guyanese”. But, did you try to get an idea of the twenty-seven year old young man’s background/ character, or his likely state of mind at the time of his fatal lapse of judgement, before, bashing him? Remember, the deceased is someone’s son, brother, and possibly father, among others. May his soul rest in peace! I too, am hopeful the truck driver is/ was not unnecessarily detained.

Sincerely,

Derrick Cummings
