Mocha squatters defy bid to move them

By Shuntel Glasgow Despite warnings since October 9 last year that they had to move to make way for an East Bank road link, Mocha Arcadia squatters yesterday defied attempts by the Ministry of Housing to evict them and a standoff developed with dozens of residents and members of the opposition arriving on the scene.

Construction worker, 30-year-old Andrew Ridley of Lot 173 Campbell and Sussex streets, Albouystown, Georgetown, and his alleged accomplice Akelow Marshall, 20, of Lot 237 Independence Boulevard, La Penitence, Georgetown, were yesterday remanded to prison over the murder of businessman Shimron Adams.

It has been over a month since the slashed and lifeless body of 56-year-old Orin Bishop also known as ‘Gassa’ was found lying in a patch of bushes along the Greenfield South Access road on the East Coast of Demerara and no one has since been charged with his murder.
