Last Friday’s editorial, which focused on Presi-dent Ramotar’s southward gaze towards the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) and deeper integration with the South American continent, ended somewhat tantalisingly with the thought that the shift of perspective away from the Caribbean Community might “reflect a growing perception that Caricom may have, for the time being, reached the limits of its possibilities.”

Before sentencing a person found guilty of an offence a magistrate or judge takes into consideration mitigating circumstances, pleas made on behalf of the accused by defence attorneys, probation or welfare officers, and sometimes the accused themselves, and as such the maximum penalty for that offence may not be unopposed.

News out of the Cayman Islands that lawmakers there passed a vote of no confidence on Tuesday ousting embattled Premier McKeeva Bush from office one week after he was arrested on suspicion of corruption, has many Guyanese everywhere asking: If it can happen in the Cayman Islands, why not Guyana?
