Please allow me to share some thoughts after having read a letter to the editor: ‘No point in LCDS supporting documents being in Amerindian languages because most Indigenous peoples can’t read them’ (SN, September 6).
If it hadn’t been for Kwakwani holding its community elections in defiance of the central authorities, most people would not have known that the government had rescinded a 1983 ministerial order which gave oversight of Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) to the respective Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs).

Ashton Simon claims that the LCDS booklet has been available at meetings of the statutory National Toshaos Council (2009-2011) and a LCDS information desk on the LCDS at the 2012 meeting (‘No point in LCDS supporting documents being in Amerindian languages because most indigenous people can’t read them,’ SN, September 5).
Recent speeches at the back-to-back political conventions in the United States must have scared anyone unfamiliar with the pandering populism and outright propaganda that precedes an American election.

The trash and filthy drain around Guyana’s Parliament epitomizes the state of Georgetown, and one can safely say Guyana – a nation plagued by corruption at all levels, with a bureaucracy that makes the nation crawl, and a political system that totally centralizes power in a country that still awaits the implementation of local elections.
