A contractor who was allegedly found with a pistol and matching ammunition in his possession was remanded to prison on Monday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Thirty-year-old Hubert McColin of 75 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition without being the owner of a valid firearm licence.

It is alleged that on March 17 at Plaisance, McColin had a 9mm pistol and seventeen matching rounds of ammunition in his possession without being the owner of a valid firearm licence.

However, McColin’s lawyer Glenn Hanoman applied for bail for his client on the grounds that he had an unblemished record in the court and that in fact he was a ‘private investigator’ attached to the Guyana Police Force.

The magistrate subsequently ordered that McColin be remanded to prison and transferred the matter to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
