Reports are that the body of the woman, Fazeela Amiad, 49, was discovered hanging by a telephone cord from a “short” coconut tree. This newspaper learnt that her partner, Jaichand “Joshua” Saligram, 31, a watchman, has since been taken into custody.

Saligram fell asleep at around 10 am and when he woke up at about 11:30 am, Amiad, who had been consuming alcohol, was no where around.  Neighbours said that the man enquired from them about her whereabouts and they told him they saw her leaving the yard but did not know which way she went.

Saligram then decided to search for her when he saw two fishermen who told him that the woman been heading towards the backdam.

Saligram, accompanied by two young boys, headed into the backdam and made the shocking discovery.

Stabroek News learnt that the woman was deeply distressed after she sold a house at Rosignol and had not received any payments. Neighbours said someone had filed an injunction against the sale and the matter was engaging the courts.

According to them she started to “take it on” and suffered a severe case of depression and started drinking heavily.

Saligram, a father of three, was helping her to cope with her problems when the two started a relationship. Police sources told this newspaper that although the man was in custody to assist with investigations, the woman’s death was still being treated as suicide.
