Japan aids St Lucia, St Vincent after Tomas

The Japanese government has extended emergency aid valued over US$180,000 to the governments of St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines which suffered losses during the recent hurricane.

According to a press release, Japan provided electric generators, water purifiers and other items equivalent to eight million JPN yen or about US$98,000 and seven million JPN yen or about US$86,000.

The release said more than five persons are reported to have died in these two countries and more than 20,000 affected in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas.

Nine hundred homes are estimated to have been destroyed and, in St Lucia water supply has been severely compromised and the island cannot access potable water.

The release said the Japanese government responded after requests for emergency relief goods from both islands.
