Fine and community service for five grammes of ganja

Marlon Kennedy, a 37-year-old father of three, of Block ‘E’ Sophia, yesterday pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.

The charge stated that on July 5 at Georgetown, he had in his possession 5 grammes of cannabis.

The prosecution stated that on the day in question a party of policemen on patrol in Guyhoc conducted a search on the defendant’s person and motorcycle after being prompted by his suspicious behaviour. They found the illegal substance concealed in his shirt pocket.

The defendant was then arrested and taken to the East La Penitence Police Station.

Kennedy’s attorney George Thomas asked the court to consider in its ruling that his client had accepted the charge at first instance, saving the court time in otherwise having to conduct a trial.

After hearing the case, the presiding magistrate informed the defendant that he would be fined $5,000 together with three months of community service.

Additionally, the court ordered that Kennedy be monitored by the Probation Department of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.
