Buxton United defeated 2-0 by Alpha United

Alpha United led by an Edison Gomes double, defeated Buxton United 2-0 in the opening encounter of the Vizion Sports and Entertainment Agency Caribbean Interclub football matches at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, Bourda on Wednesday.

Gomes opened his account in the 34th minute with a strike to the lower left hand corner from inside the centre of the 18-yard box, following a cheeky one-two combination with strike partner Manasseh Primo from just on top of the penalty area.

He doubled his side’s lead 11 minutes into the second period, slotting home his right-footed strike into the bottom right-hand corner of the net from inside the 18-yard box, after fighting off his defensive marker.

In an invited comment, winning Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said, “I am happy with the performance I saw from them, it shows that our depth is not because of wanting to have a crowd at Alpha. It shows clearly that the players not playing regularly can go out and execute the things we worked on.”

He further stated, “The display was good coming against a team sitting third in the GFF national league. It gives me an opportunity and more-or-less shows me when needed, there are people we can call upon down on our depth chart.”

“To see how they go out there and play, it augurs well for the club. It shows that the work that the training staff is doing; the group has bought in to it and not just the regular players,” said Dover.

The action moves to the Buxton Ground on the East Coast of Demerara today as Alpha United will battle Slingerz FC in the opening game at 6.00pm while home-side Buxton United will engage Boystown FC in the feature showdown at 8.00pm.
