Schools table tennis tourney starts today

The Business School/Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) mini cadet, cadet, junior team and singles four-day country-wide schools’ table tennis tournament commences today from 4.00 pm at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

Godfrey Munroe, President of GTTA, speaking at a press briefing noted that the tournament which is in its eighth year is critical for the success of the activities and programmes of the GTTA, as they specifically target the youth.

Director of Sports, Neil Kumar in praising the initiative, stated that it can be used as a nursery for the youths to have them involved in table tennis and to make them better players. He confirmed the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports’ willingness to work with the GTTA to provide the necessary assistance for the development and expansion of the sport.

James Bovell, Managing Director of The Business School expressed his pleasure in being involved in the development of table tennis and said that over the years the tournament has produced top youth players like Chelsea Edghill among others.

The divisions to be contested with 4 players each, are 11 years and under, 13 years and under, 15 years and under, and 18 years and under. Players must have attained the stipulated age on or before December 31, 2014. A team can be mixed with both boys and girls.

Prizes will be awarded to the first three finishers in each category, most outstanding players – male and female, most improved players – male and female, the best dressed school and the most disciplined school.
