Johnson, Duff, Edghill, Narain cop TT titles

Jamal Duff and Chelsea Edghill secured the boys and girls’ under-11 titles respectively when the 2007 annual National Sport Commission (NSC) Mashramani table tennis tournament continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday.

Duff dropped a set against Shammar Muntu before eventually winning 12-10, 6-11, 11-6 and 11-3 in four sets in the final of the boys’ under-11 category.

Elishaba Johnson took third place with an 11-9, 11-7 and 11-8 win over Narvin Sankar.

Edghill whipped Analisa Branche 11-5, 11-6 and 11-5 to record a straight-set win that earned her the 2007 Mashramani under-11 title. Dominique Assing took third place ahead of Vigayo Panday in that group.

Defending under-nine champion, Johnson also defeated Sankar 5-11, 11-7, 11-9 and 19-17 to satisfactorily defend his title Monday evening. Obediah Stanton took third place ahead of Caleb Hinds in that category.

In the girls’ under-nine category, Tiarah Narain defeated Branche 11-7, 11-9 and 14-12 to claim the title while Cheryl Duncan easily won 11-7, 11-9 and 11-7 against Eunique Gaime in the finals of the girls’ under-13 group.

The boys’ under-13 final will be contested today between Denzel Duff and Samuel Fraser, with Jamal Duff and Hamid Ram Lagan battling it out for third place in the same category.

The tournament continues today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with the under -15 boys and girls’ matches as well as the under-18 boys and girls’ contests. The men and women’s singles will begin on Saturday.
