GWI says work sites must be registered to use water

The Guyana Water Inc (GWI) yesterday announced that it would be moving to regularize construction sites where large volumes of treated water are being used and not accounted for through the company’s metering and regulation systems.

A release from the company said it has noted with concern that with the development pace in Guyana a number of commercial and industrial entities and to an extent domestic as well are using treated water for construction purposes.

“This is not a good practice as water is very expensive to treat and distribute to the consumer,” the company said while acknowledging that in some instances it is unavoidable, especially in central Georgetown where canals are not available for people to get water to do their concrete works.

However, the company said in this regard contractors and owners of property who are engaged in construction are required to register their construction works with the company.

Meanwhile, the company warned that failing to register the work can result in disconnection of the water supply, especially as it relates to those areas where wastage of water occurs.

And the company also disclosed that arrears have built up for tenants who have abandoned their leases and have left large amounts of money outstanding with their landlords, who are in turn responsible for their properties and should make sure that water service charges are paid by their tenants. It was noted that GWI does not accept responsibility for the leases since it has been entering into agreement with tenants only on condition that the landlords consent and sign as guarantor to take responsibility for any arrears.
