House-to-house registration now set for January 7 start

The new target date for the beginning of the house-to-house registration exercise is January 7, 2008 and the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has assured the opposition political parties that it has not rescinded its decision to produce new ID cards for all persons captured during the exercise.

More than a month after the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) seized 4,685 carats of rough diamonds worth US$644,000 ($131,665,793) from a Belgian firm, Paul Eastman, the middleman between the company and GGMC was on Tuesday charged with false declaration.
