Bakewell and Francine’s contribute to Kashif and Shangai football tourney

The dynamic Kashif and Shangai organization continues to receive support for their upcoming annual football tournament with Bakewell Bakery and Francine’s Fish Shop both making sterling contributions to the organization yesterday.

At Bakewell’s outlet at the corner of Albert Street and North Road, Sales Executive Maurice Robello presented to Aubrey ‘Shangai’ Major a cheque for an undisclosed sum.

Speaking to the media after the presentation, Robello highlighted how delighted Bakewell was to be a part of the group.

“They are the most dynamic duo in the field of sports in Guyana and we at Bakewell are very elated to be a part of them. They have been running off this competition for a number of years with success and we know that this year’s tournament will be another success.”

Bakewell also made a sterling contribution to Bakewell Topp XX Football Club, being one of the primary sponsors, (the other being Bakewell Buxton All Stars Football Club) to the tune of $350,000 as they continue their preparations for the upcoming tournament which is deemed a marquee event on the local football calendar.

Robello also highlighted the professional manner in which the club is being managed and the excellent way the players conduct themselves on and off the field.

“We hosted Topp XX at a gala dinner function when they last won the competition in 2005 and I must commend the management of the club for the professional manner displayed by the club.

“Although they were surprised, the players conducted themselves in such a manner that made us proud to be a part of the club for the past eight years.”

Across at Francine’s Fish shop, Major received a trophy that will be issued to the Most Valuable Player of the third and fouth place playoff match and 30 balls to be used during the duration of the competition.

Jermin Culley, Managing Director of Francine’s Fish Shop, told Stabroek Sport that although he had been making some contributions to the Kashif and Shangai organization in the past, this was the first year for Francine’s Fish Shop to do so. He also announced that they will be opening another outlet at Ketley Street soon.

“I am very elated to be making this contribution to a dynamic duo who has been very professional in their endeavours in hosting this tournament today and as long as they see it fit to continue holding this event, we at Francine’s Fish Shop will continue to play our part in whatever way possible to ensure that the tournament is another success story as it has always been.”

In his response, Major thanked both Bakewell and Francine’s for their sterling contributions.

“Kashif and Shangai is pleased to be associated with Bakewell, the bread giants of Guyana, over the years. They have done more than enough for Topp XX and now have Buxton on board, and we do look forward for their continued support to us as we endeavour to host the best tournament ever. Francine’s gesture is also heartfelt and I would like to extend my gratitude to the management and staff for their generous support.”
