GCF names ‘A’ and B teams

On the basis of performances in 2007, the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has identified their top 10 cyclists for the year and plans to introduce a classification and a relegation system in the new year.

The 10 cyclists have been placed into two special teams and, based on their showing next year will either be promoted or relegated.

The cyclists named in the ‘A’ team are Marlon Williams, Alonzo Greaves, Warren McKay, Junior Niles and Leer Nunes.

Team ‘B’ riders are John Charles, Robin Persaud, Jaikarran Sukhai, Ian Jackson and Darren Allen.

The decision was taken at the GCF December statutory meeting held last week at Olympic House in Queenstown. President of the GCF Hector Edwards disclosed that the composition of the teams would be reviewed every three months and based on performance locally or overseas, a cyclist may be promoted or demoted to either team.

According to Edwards, cyclists participating overseas must submit to the GCF in a timely manner, their performances at such events. This is one of the criteria for retaining a position on either ‘A’ or ‘B’ team.

The selection does not include junior riders, Edwards noted.
