Barbados romped to their second consecutive outright win in the 2008 regional Carib Beer Series competition by inflicting an innings and 57 runs defeet over Guyana at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, yesterday.

Scores: Guyana 185 and 289; Barbados 531.

Guyana, with a deficit of 346 runs, began yesterday’s final day on 85-3 and were bowled out for 289 losing their last three wickets for 19 runs just before tea.

Leon Johnson and skipperRamnaresh Sarwan resumed on 21 and two not out respectively and the pair batted cautiously playing the occasional attacking stroke, as they sought to rebuild the innings.

Sarwan came into his own with a pugnacious drive off the first ball of the third over of the day bowled by Kemar Roach, which sped to the cover boundary.

He followed it up with his trademark cut shot to the third man boundary off the wily Suleiman Benn which brought up the team’s 100 and which came off 39.1 overs and took 165 minutes.

Johnson, who took 15 deliveries to score his first run, did so in convincing fashion by pulling Tino Best to long leg for six. He then struck the same bowler between gully and point for four in his next over.

He was undone by the brilliant fielding of Alcindo Holder who ran about 25 metres to his left before diving and coming up with the ball, much to the amazement of his team-mates.

Johnson, who made 36 from 135 balls, battled for 197 minutes and struck two fours and one six.

Top Form

Sarwan, though, was in top form. He turned Benn off his legs down to fine leg, then steered him past slip for successive boundaries in one over and when Dwayne Smith replaced Best, Sarwan cut him past the diving Shamarh Brooks at point for four, then turned Benn off his legs to a short backward square leg to post his 50, his fourth of the season and 18th regional which came from 85 balls and in 125 minutes with six fours.

New batsman, Assad Fudadin, began with a straight drive off Benn for four and then two balls later, struck the bowler through mid-wicket for another boundary.

Sarwan then struck Smith for successive boundaries in one over through mid on and midwicket, bringing up the 50 partnership between himself and Fudadin.

At lunch Guyana were 205-4 with Sarwan on 74 and Fudadin 31.

Guyana lost two quick wickets after lunch including Sarwan’s as the defending champions scented victory.

Fudadin was caught on the rebound by wicket-keeper Carlo Morris after the ball ricocheted from the leg of Jason Haynes at forward short leg.

He made 32 from 72 balls and struck two fours. His partnership with Sarwan for the fifth wicket was worth 87 runs.

Sarwan soon followed, caught at forward short leg by Dale Richards off Benn for 82. He faced 160 balls and struck nine fours during his 200-minute stay at the wicket, and at 219-6, Guyana were staring straight down the barrel of defeat.

Wicket-keeper Derwin Christian, however struck a few lusty blows.

He took 14 runs from one over bowled by the lanky Benn, including two fours and one six over midwicket and forced the Barbados skipper Corey Collymore to take the new ball.

Christian eventually went for 39 caught at third slip. He struck six fours and one six from 82 balls while Crandon was adjudged lbw to Dwayne Smith for three.

Veerasammy Permaul was caught by Hinds at gully off Benn for two while Smith knocked back the off stump off Zaheer Mohammed ensuring Barbados claimed their fifth victory over Guyana in the past 10 years.

Mohammed made 23 that was decorated with four fours from 44 balls and batted for 60 minutes.

Benn ended with 4-98 and received support from Smith (3-65) and Roach (2-42).

Ryan Hinds was named Man-of-the-Match for his century (108) and his five wickets and three catches.
