Squad of 47 shortlisted for 15’s qualifiers in April

The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has named 47 local rugby prospects to commence training for the NAWIRA 2011 Men’s 15’s qualifiers, which will be held in The Cayman Islands from April 19- 27.

Once successful in those qualifiers the Guyana side will be eligible for participation in the 2011 Rugby Men’s 15’s World Cup.

President of the GRFU, Noel Adonis, said that the majority of the players who have been selected to be part of the preparatory session, had been part of the squad selected to attend the Caribbean Rugby Men’s 15’s in The Cayman Islands last August which was unfortunately cancelled due to the untimely occurence of Hurricane Dean in the region.

Others he said gained selection on the basis of their performance in the 15’s competition throughout the year.

The forty-seven players selected are: Albert Larose, Alexander Atwell, Algernon Felix, Aluko Venture, Alwyn Etwah, Avery Corbin, Calton Yearwood, Christopher Singh, Claude Jackson, Claudius Butts, Clive Montouth, Cloyd Prowell, Cordell Carrington, Cordwell Reynolds, Dane Parks, Dellon Downer, Delroy Gordon, Dwanye Schroeder,Dwayne Thornhill, Elwin Chase, filon Thompson, Jason Allen, Jason Tyrell Jose, Felicien, Julio Gonzales, Kevin Mc Kenzie, Leon Greaves, Matteo Friends, Peobo, Hamilton, Rondell Williams, Richard Staglon, Robin Curtis, Roland D’Aguiar, Ronald Mayers, Ryan George, Satesh Samaroo, Shawzim Samad, Staurt May, Theordore Henry, Travis Eastman, Triston Fraites, Troy Arjoon, troy Bascom, Walter George and Wilfred Batson.

National coach Sherlock Solomon will be in charge of the above listed players for next three months and will be assisted by Barrington Brown and coach of the Guyana Defence Force Rugby Team, Clinton Clarke.

The player will have to undergo weight training at the Michael Parris Gym which officially began yesterday and will continue every Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5:30 for the next two to three weeks.

After the weight training aspect of the training has been completed, shortlisted player will then take the field to showcase their strength, speed and ball handling skills on the field in hopes of being among the chosen twenty two players that will made up the final squad for the April qualifiers.
