These workers are on a permanent go slow

Dear Editor,

On Friday Feb 15 I visited a friend in New Amsterdam. At both ends of the river, Rosignol and New Amsterdam there were long lines. I did some enquiries and found that the workers at T&HD were all wasting time, they were on a permanent go slow.

Only visit New Amsterdam and you will be shocked to see the quality of work that the workers are putting out. These workers have no supervision, no pride. Every wrong attitude in a worker, you can find there. The boat is often late. Only a visit and perhaps filming can convince some people. Another thing is every one has a cell phone and each seems to be making emergency calls while working.

At both sides of the river, I saw over 25 beggars. Sometimes they come in flocks of 3 to 5 to beg.

A brief stop at a Chinese restaurant revealed a large number of mad people. I chatted with the waitresses and they assured us that there were over 100 people of unsound mind on the streets in New Amsterdam. Who is responsible for these people? What is happening to the food, drugs etc. that the government is daily supplying to the institution at Canje? I was told it costs a few million dollars per month. How come the public servants and politicians do not see these people on the streets?

On a local television I saw a newscast where a truck was alleged to be dumping faeces on the main public highway. I saw a toilet over a gutter and children playing in the water in the gutter.

Do we want tourists in Guyana? Are there no health inspectors?

Why are people not charged and brought before the court I know the court officers are also looking for a raise.

Yours faithfully,

J.H. Prince
