Chanderpaul, Noel brighten rain ruined second day

Despite a belligerent and unbeaten 207 from West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Guyana were bowled out for 421 by the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) thanks mainly to the efforts of Jamal Noel who took a career best figures of 6-101 at the National Stadium, Providence yesterday.

In reply, CCC were 29 without loss when rain stopped play at 4.40pm with Jason Parris and Simon Jackson on 16 and 11 respectively.

A total of 260 minutes was lost due to rain and bad light.

Earlier, Guyana resumed on 338-4 after the entire morning session was lost due to overnight and early morning rain.

The overnight pair of Chanderpaul and Travis Dowlin started cautiously against the bowling of Kevin Mc Lean and Noel, who were operating with the second new ball which was taken immediately.

Dowlin was palpably LBW by Mc Lean for 36, 27 minutes after play got underway ending a 109-run, fifth-wicket partnership with Chanderpaul.

He faced 107 deliveries and batted for 152 minutes hitting three fours.

Wicketkeeper Darwin Christian joined Chanderpaul and immediately came off the mark by pulling a short ball from Mc Lean just out of the reach of wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton and to the fine leg boundary for four.

Chanderpaul soon got into his stride with an exquisitely struck front foot drive which went between cover and extra cover for four off Mc Lean whilst Christian also struck Mc Lean for two fours in one over.

Christian had reached 16 (3×4) when he received a short pitched delivery from Noel and in attempting to pull succeeded in getting a top edge and the ball lobbed to mid off where Jason Parris ran around from mid on and held the catch.

Chanderpaul was unmoved by Christian’s dismissal and that of Esaun Crandon and continued to move closer to his second regional double century with a pull through midwicket off Noel for four.

Crandon had made five in a partnership of 17 with Chanderpaul for the seventh wicket before he went for an injudicious shot off Noel and only succeeding in edging the ball through to Walton who gleefully accepted.

Zaheer Mohammed did not hang around long, pushing tentatively forward to another Noel delivery which was pitched on off stump and again Walton accepted the offer as Guyana lost four wickets for 57 runs in the post lunch session. Noel duly picked up his first five wicket haul at this level surpassing his previous best of 4-87.

Trevon Garraway joined Chanderpaul and turned Gilford Moore through midwicket for three.

He also got a single through the cover area to realize the 400 which came off 106.1 overs for his team before he was trapped on the crease by Noel for five.

Chanderpaul eventually got to his double century when he pulled Noel down to long off for his 16th four.

He faced 264 balls and struck one six whilst batting for 430 minutes. Debutant Devendra Bishu came off the mark when he drove Moore magnificently through cover for four.

Chanderpaul then steered Moore for four down to third man while Bishu pulled a full toss from Kavesh Kantasingh, who replaced Noel from the Southern End to Noel at mid on for four to end the innings.

Chanderpaul was left unbeaten on 207 as the home team, who lost their last six wickets for 83 runs from 24.3 overs were bowled out after batting for 112.3 overs.

Noel ended with 6-101. He received support from Kirk Wilkinson (1-38), Shirley Clarke (1-53), Kantasingh (1-57) and Mc Lean 1-93 as the CCC team employed just four bowlers compared to six on the first day.

In their reply, Jackson pulled a short delivery from Garraway through backward square for four.

Parris joined the party when he drove Crandon’ first ball of his fifth over elegantly through the cover region for four and followed it up by hitting Garraway over mid off for another boundary in the following over to carry the score to 23-0.

When play continues today from 9:30am weather permitting, the CCC team will be looking to get the further 243 runs to avoid the follow on.
