Top grasstrack riders on show Easter Sunday -fierce competition expected among sport-quad participants

Most of the country’s top grasstrack riders and sport quad (four-wheelers) will be on show on Sunday when Friends Inc. stages its annual charity grasstrack meet at Better Hope Ground, East Coast Demerara.

One of the organizers of the event, Nicholas McLean, disclosed that the 15-race programme will feature the nation’s top grasstrack racers in what is expected to be a day of thrills and excitement.

Mc Lean said that for the first time sport quads (four-wheelers) will be introduced to Georgetown fans and there is expected to be fierce competition between quad riders from Georgetown and Bartica.

Georgetown quad-riders will include Steve Sugrim, Raphael DeGoeas, Jimmy Ten-Pow, Kevin Naraine and `Pucka’ Persaud and they are expected to throw down the gauntlet on reigning Bartica-based champion Oliver Younge and his support team of Martindale and Eon Christopher.

The 125 cc two-stroke bikes are also expected to attract attention with Bartician Bobby Rasul aboard his ’07 Honda seeking to stave off a strong challenge from Stephen Vieira, Dave Gangadin, Charles Henry, Alvin Balgobin, Abi Rahaman, Chris McLean, Ravi Singh, Haydock Parris, Jose Jardine, Andrew Wong, Chris Sawh, Wayne Christiani and Zaheer Sheriff. Veteran champs like Vassy Barry and Andy Jaskarran are also likely to face the starter.

There will also be a novelty 100-metre race planned for the little ones in motorized ride-on cars,in addition to races for Chappy bikes and 85-100 cc mini bikes, Mc Lean disclosed.

Riders will be racing under the GMR&SC rules and the event will be coordinated with the expert assistance of Conrad McDavid, secretary and other volunteers from GMR&SC.

According to Mc Lean there are also plans for a MOTORCYCLE EXPO on race day which should feature special deals and gate prizes for patrons.

“Organizers expect to showcase motorbike brands and products in an Expo tent” he disclosed.

He said the price of admission would be $1000 for adults and $500 for children under-12 years
