Grasstrack action is set to return to the West Bank of Demerara this Sunday when the National Grasstrack Racing Club stages its first meet of 2012.

Ten races are carded for the day in which professionals, amateurs and novices will vie for points which will be tabulated at the end of the five meet series. The overall winner is expected to ride away with a new 2012 Yamaha 125 Motorcycle and riders are already confident of victory.

According to the organizers, the motive behind the meet is to give a much needed boost to the sport  so as to awaken interest and give riders much needed activities which is sorely lacking.

The National Grasstrack Racing Club which was formed last August by local and overseas personnel, aims to have many riders participating and already many veterans have signaled their intention to compete.

Riders have expressed their interest in winning the motorcycle and the meet is expected to see the return of reigning Caribbean Super Bike Champion Stephen “Valentino Rossi” Vieira to the dirt.   Should Vieira enter Sunday’s race, he will be up against the best in the Grasstrack business and it’s left to be seen if he is as good riding on Dirt as he is on tracks.

Sunday’s activities will attract riders from all across the nation and from overseas and will get underway at 12:00 noon.  According to Kamal Rahaman an organizer of the event, things are on stream for the second leg of the series to be staged in Mahaicony and the third leg in Anna Regina. The venue for the penultimate meet and the finals are yet to be decided due to unavailability of grounds but the organizers are confident it will soon be worked out.

The Club is also looking to introduce motor cross sport in a few years’ time and will seriously try to field a team in international meets.

“I am a Motor Car racer and I see from time to time the difficulties encountered at the South Dakota Circuit so we are looking to really give these Dirt Bike Riders a fair chance to succeed,” Rahaman added. Sunday’s action will be complemented by a variety of games for children and musical entertainment.
