Compensation promised for Aroaima worker’s death – relatives

Relatives of the Aroaima Mining Company worker who was killed in an accident on Saturday said the company has promised to pay some amount of compensation for the man’s death.

Kevin Major, 36, of South Amelia’s Ward, Linden lost his life when the company vehicle he was travelling in lost control and careened down a hill, after one of the tyres punctured. The man’s relatives said Major was in the front seat of the bauxite company’s pick-up truck when it suffered a blow out of one of its tyres and the vehicle toppled.

According to relatives, Major was partially thrown out of the vehicle as a result of the blow out and suffered massive injuries about his body.

The man’s wife Shondell Major said his head was bashed in and there were several marks to his hands and chest.

Another employee of the company suffered spinal injuries and was taken to the Georgetown Hospital.

Major died on arrival at the Linden Hospital Complex.

Describing her husband as a cheerful and hardworking person Shondell Major said she would miss him greatly.

She said she last spoke to him on Friday. Major leaves to mourn his wife, two children and scores of relatives. Major previously worked as a minibus driver.
