Voltage woes affect power at hospital’s maternity ward

Voltage instability in the power supply to the Maternity Unit, New Market Street on Sunday resulted in damage to fluorescent lamp ballasts, the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation said.

The two electrical circuits were automatically disconnected by the protective schemes, preventing any further damage to the building and the in-patients and the hospital staff. The situation was restored to normalcy about two hours after the fluctuation.

A press statement from the medical institution issued yesterday afternoon said the voltage instability occurred on Sunday around 9.47 pm.
“The GPHC wishes to state that the incident did not affect the regular operations of the critical aspects of the Maternity Unit, such as the incubators,” the release said. It added that the hospital is moving in the direction of procuring fusable metal encapsulated ballasts with thermal overload protectors which will reduce even further the chances of a reoccurrence of such an incident.
