Cheddi Jagan centre announces essay winners

The Cheddi Jagan Research Centre announced the winners in its 2008 essay competition recently.

According to a press release 38 entries were drawn from across the country but Mohamed Yasin carted off the $100,000 first prize. The second prize of $50,000 was won by Nadia Ganesh and the third prize of a plane ticket to Kaieteur Falls was awarded to Raymond Yusuf. Anastasia Alli’s essay merited honourable mention and a collection of books on Jagan, the release said.

According to the release ten consolation prizes of Jagan’s West on Trial will be awarded.

Certificates of participation will also be given to all entrants. The participants were required to write an essay on the topic ‘Discuss the contributions of Dr Cheddi Jagan in the struggle for the liberation of Guyana.’

The Centre’s planned lecture on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Jagan’s entry to parliament was given by Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee. Rohee’s lecture, titled ‘Dr Jagan, His Life/work in the 1947 Legislative Council’, was hosted at the centre’s conference room and was witnessed by a capacity crowed, the release said.
