National senior c/ships barely get underway

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) national senior championships barely got underway at the Police Sports Club Ground, EveLeary following continuous rainfall in Georgetown yesterday.

The scheduled two-day meet which was originally scheduled to begin at noon began at 15:20 hrs owing to rain.

Only one event was contested, the male 10K which was won by Kelvin Johnson in a time of 32 minutes and 45 seconds (32:45).

Dennis Horatio and Damian Blackman finished second and third respectively with times of 35:43 and 39:31 seconds.

According to the AAG, the events, which were to be contested yesterday, were poorly attended.

This forced the organizers to reschedule those events for today and they will take place after the long jump event.

The long jump event will be the first event on the programme today and will hop off at noon at the YMCA ground, Thomas Lands.

The track and field events will take place at the Police Sports Club ground.

The weather had earlier forced the AAG to cancel the national senior trials which was scheduled for February and a number of other events have also been axed from the AAG’s calendar of events. (KB)
