An ongoing court matter concerning the dilapidated house at 43 Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara (EBD) may be preventing the Mayor and City Council from demolishing the building which residents say is a threat to their safety.

The dilapidated house at Lot 43 Mc Doom, East Bank DemeraraYesterday’s edition of  Stabroek News carried a letter captioned “City Hall should demolish this derelict house” in which the writer said the house “sits completely rotted and infested with wood ants” and is hazardous to the community’s safety.According to a resident who is related to the owner of the wood ants-infested Mc Doom house, he has reported the matter to the Mayor and City Council on a number of occasions and yet the house  has not been demolished. The  man also stated that there is currently a matter in the High Court concerning the property.

This newspaper understands that where the property is involved in a court matter, the City Council cannot demolish the building. When such matters are reported to the City Council, the details are given to the council’s Engineering Department. An engineer along with the Town Clerk then visits the site and a decision has to be made whether the building can be demolished.

When contacted yesterday the Mayor and City Council was in no position to make a statement about the matter.
