Indentured labourers had pioneering spirit, determination – GOPIO

The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) says it remembers the first group of indentured labourers to British Guiana for “their pioneering spirit, determination, persistence and endurance under extremely harsh conditions.”

In a press release the group said while survival must have been their first concern the forebears were able to maintain their traditions, culture and religion and their descendants will always be proud of this accomplishment.

The GOPIO also congratulated the government for commemorating the 170th anniversary.

The group said it continues to encourage and support active promotion of Indian traditions that have served the forebears well.
