Culture helped forebears through hardships – Hinds

Acting President Samuel Hinds said culture played an important role when Indians came to Guyana since it allowed them to endure hardships and disappointments they encountered after arriving.

Speaking at the Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) mela at the National Park on Sunday, he said, arrival day symbolizes the arrival of all those who came to Guyana, adding they all worked to overcome challenges and are still working towards a united country. According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, Hinds commended the IAC on the mela. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony briefly commented at the mela that the struggles Indians faced influenced every sphere of life in the Caribbean to make the culture of the region richer with their presence.

Cultural performances including an item from the Bhujpuri Folk Group from India were among the highlights of the event, GINA said.
