Why the accusation of hoarding if there is no shortage?

Dear Editor,

The implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) has caused tremendous pain, suffering and hunger for many citizens, especially in the hinterland communities. In addition, the relevant minister is often on television and radio glorifying his export record and calling on farmers to capitalize on the increase in the price of rice. Is this Dr Jagan’s PPP working class government?

Now that the effects are biting, we can hear the words of the Burnham era – ‘hoarding,’ ‘unscrupulous’ and how there is an abundance of supplies to satisfy the local and export markets. Government is also selling rice in designated areas to pacify some and deceive others. If there is pushing and shoving for the cheap rice, who cares? We are catapulting to the Burnham era with haste. Citizens need to ask why the accusation of hoarding if there is no shortage, and why now.

Our critical situation now needs a sensible unified approach and not a unilateral clumsy approach.

Yours faithfully,
 M Sookraj
