Ministry honours 112-year-old Matilda Lewis

At 112 years old, Matilda Lewis, who is believed to be the oldest woman in the Caribbean, last Friday received a presentation of a basket of goods and a bouquet of flowers from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

The presentation was made to the centenarian at the Salvation Army Women’s Home, Wortmanville by Assistant Chief Social Services Officer (ag) Arnold Mickle, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Mickle made the presentation on behalf of Minister of Human Services and Social Security Priya Manickchand.

He told Lewis who is thought to be one of the oldest of 76 centenarians still alive that the ministry will continue to look into her welfare if the need arises.
Mickle further expressed the ministry’s wishes and congratulations to Lewis, and noted that she is a very important individual in Guyana who is still able to give advice to youths and others around her.

Lewis was born on May 16, 1896 and is now spending her 16th year at the women’s home where she is loved and cared for by her fellow inmates.
Speaking to reporters, Lewis said the key to her longevity is not being married nor having any children.

According to caregivers in the home, she is not suffering from any serious health problem and her hearing and memory are still good.
Lewis encouraged young people to place their trust in God and live decent lives, GINA reported.
