Man wounded friend in drunken row over filly

A 40-year-old man who wounded his friend in the head because of a horse was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Brian Persaud of North Sophia pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawfully wounding his neighbour and friend, Ramjit Ramotar.

On May 18 at North Sophia the defendant unlawfully wounded Ramotar in his head.

According to Persaud, both he and Ramotar are horse and cart operators. Persaud explained to the court that Ramotar’s filly was stolen sometime last year, and when his [Persaud’s] horse died he purchased another and Ramotar said that the horse was the same filly that was stolen from him last year.
The magistrate was told that both men used alcohol frequently. They admitted that they drank together and on the day in question Ramotar was drunk. Ramotar said that the horse Persaud bought looked like his filly which had been stolen so he held on to it.

Persaud said that after they had the misunderstanding about the horse he hit Ramotar in the head with a piece of wood. He asked the court to give him a chance saying that he was willing to compensate Ramotar and that he was sorry.

Persaud paid the virtual complainant $20,000 as compensation and he was placed on a bond to keep the peace for two years. “Don’t go and drink out the money now,” the magistrate told Ramotar as he was leaving the court with his compensation.
