GASA in hunt for funding for 2008 Goodwill Games

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) has begun a steadfast campaign to gather financial assistance for its hosting of the 2008 Goodwill Swimming Championships to be held at the 25-metre Castellani Pool from August 15-17.

GASA’s secretary Karen Pilgrim told Stabroek Sport yesterday that the association was very committed to raising the projected sum of approximately $12m  that would be needed to host the championships.

“We are utilizing the same approach used in 2005 when we hosted these championships, since that strategy went well for us.  “So far, we have spoken to some of the sponsors who had assisted us last time and they are happy with the exposure that was given to them,” she said.

She said too that the cost amounts to about $12m because as host, GASA is responsible for providing accommodation, meals and transportation for participating teams along with medals, in keeping with the protocol of the games.

Pilgrim said that they are currently sending out sponsorship letters to as many companies as possible, and one of their new approaches is seeking sponsorship for each event.

The cost outlined by Pilgrim for sponsorship for events is $25,000 for individual races and $50,000 for relays, and 112 events are scheduled.

She also noted that GASA has already gained financial assistance from Desinco  Trading and Boskalis Guyana Inc. while they have received firm commitments from other members of the corporate sector.
