Amerindian communities get equipment to help boost income

Several Amerindian communities are benefitting from the KfW Small Grants project implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency with support from the GFA Consultancy Group of Germany.

An EPA release said that communities in Region Nine have received tractors, pumps and threshing machines to help with increased crop production in a bid to alleviate poverty. The villages are expected to utilize the equipment for the cultivation of crops such as peanuts and cassava.

Region One communities have received a tractor and trailer to help with the transportation of more water coconuts from Almond Beach which is expected to increase their income and discourage the harvesting of marine turtles.

The funding for these projects are made possible through the German Bank for Reconstruction and Develop-ment which has been providing grants over the last two years for communities living in protected areas. The project commenced in 2006 and has supported a number of communities at Shell Beach, Kaieteur and the Kanuku Mountains.
