Carib Degenerates win warm-up tournament

The Carib Degenerates veteran side emerged big winners on the opening day of the Guyana Hockey Board’s Warm-Up Indoor Hockey Tournament with a 9-0 victory over the youthful Everest Hikers ‘B’ at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Monday evening.

The Hikers ‘B’ side made up of players that participated in the GHB’s Scotia Bank Summer Camp were thought a valuable lesson by the “Senior” Degenerates.

Jonathan Yearwood led the charge for the Degenerates with a five-goal tally along with a hat-trick from Triston Gomes and one from Brennette Gordon.

GCC ‘B’ almost pulled off the upset of the night but had to settle for a creditable draw against the highly favoured Everest ‘A’ in a thrilling opening match of the evening that ended on 6-6.

With Everest top striker Jerry Bell scoring in the opening minute, GCC was forced to give chase and equalised two minutes later through an Andrew Xavier penalty corner.

Everest pulled ahead by three goals by midway through the first half but GCC clawed their way back drawing even in the 16th minute.

Both teams registered two more each to leave the final score at 6-6.

Bell scored a hat-trick for the Hikers and was joined by Robert France, Devin Munroe and Randy Hope who scored a goal each.

GCC’s goals came from Andrew Xavier, Stuart Gonsalves, Philip Fernandes, Rafael DeGroot and a double by Zack Gonsalves.

Old Fort suffered mixed fortunes as their ‘A’ team demolished the Western Dragons of Uitvlugt by 6 goals to 0 while their ‘B’ team was humbled by 9-0 from GCC ‘A’.

Askofu Simon led all scores with a hat-trick against the Dragons while team-mates Adrian Brandt, Aderemi Simon and John Abrams added one each.

The GCC ‘A’ score sheet reflected doubles by Captain Devin Hooper and Alan Fernandes and singles by Shaka Gill, Orland Semple, Kevin Spencer, Dwayne Scott and Peter DeGroot.

The tournament continues throughout the week at the Sports Hall.
