President showed graciousness

Dear Editor,

Patriots and concerned citizens are quite properly, critical when some folks distort our history, or make inappropriate statements. Equally so, I believe, we are duty bound to be laudatory when our history is put in its correct context, and when, in particular, our leaders, make proper statements.

Last evening [Monday] at the celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Caricom, replying to the toast by Secretary General Edward Carrington, His Excellency, President Bharrat Jagdeo recapping the journey of Caricom, and referring to the earliest architects and visionaries of the Caricom integration movement said, inter alia “and our own Forbes Burnham,” etc. This was quintessential graciousness and maturity showed.

Beyond that, in a real sense, the way this remark was made opens that heavy door to let in the winds of reconciliation, appeasement and therefore harmony. Several persons expressed satisfaction about this development. I congratulate the President for his perspicuity and wisdom.

Allow me to add this caveat; at public functions I have noted that both the President and Prime Minister Sam Hinds in recognizing persons present, their protocol has been impeccable. One would hope that their subordinates and others would follow suit.

I hope for the sake of Guyana and our youth, that this development will be a continuing process.

Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green JP
Mayor
