The Future Star Cricket Camp which began last week at the National Insurance Scheme ground under the watchful eyes of Programme Coordinator Edwin Seeraj and coach Oswald Waldrond yesterday attracted president of the Georgetown Cricket Association Bish Panday.
The P&P Insurance Brokers Managing Director yesterday addressed the youths of the Camp about opportunities that exist in the sport.
Panday, in an interactive learning session with a turnout of just over 30 youths spoke about the numerous opportunities for those wanting to make a career for themselves in the sport stating that apart from becoming a test player there were available other jobs such as becoming a coach, an umpire, a commentator, a match referee or a scorer among other aspects.
Panday used examples of cricket personalities that the youths would recognize at the blink of an eye and stated that one “terrific example of a retired test cricketer who became a coach was Roger Harper. ”
He also wished the youths, coach and programme coordinator success for the remainder of the programme.
Seeraj said that the camp teaches both theory and practical aspects about the game of cricket but said the inclement weather had restricted the progression of a few practical sessions.
The five week programme which began on July 14 and runs until August 15, has a total of 55 participants who attend one of two, four-hour sessions Mondays to Saturdays.
Youths between the ages of eight and 12-years attend the morning session held from 8am to noon while youths between the ages of 12-15 years attend the afternoon session (12:30pm – 4:30pm).
