Bad Weather affects rugby season

The recent rainy season is wreaking havoc with sports in Guyana and one of the disciplines that have been affected tremendously is the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU).

So said president of the GRFU, Noel Adonis,  who  told Stabroek Sport that the  body had been forced to postpone a few of its scheduled tournaments such as the Women’s Rugby 10s and the Men’s Rugby 7s.

Adonis said that the weather has made the rugby playfield in the National Park unfit to stage these competitions.

“We were hoping to commence the Women’s Rugby 10s and also the Male Rugby 7s on July 19 but because of how the weather has been behaving we could not and it has made the playing area unsafe,” Adonis added.

He mentioned that they are hoping to carry on with proceedings on August 2 if the weather gets better. But, for the time being, Adonis said they are being very watchful of the weather.

The weather has further upset the chance of the commencement of a second division 10s tournament which was on the calendar of events for the GRFU.

The tournament was set to begin on July 23 after the completion of the Men’s 10 and Women’s 7s.

The second division tournament is primarily an under-21 tournament which is also open to players above the age of 21 who have not had a chance to represent Guyana at the national level.
Those players will be classified eligible to play by the GRFU classification committee, said Adonis.

August 6 is the scheduled date for the kick off of the tournament and the teams involved will compete for the Terry Braithwaite Trophy.
