Teenager Kishore wins European Union-sponsored golf tourney

He might be a teenager but on Saturday Avinda Kishore proved himself to be a `Big Man’ on the Lusignan Golf Course when he carted off the European Union’s (EU) Stableford tournament winning from a large field.

The tournmament attracted 46 golfers, the largest turnout so far this season and saw  Kishore edging Mike Guyadin on a count back to win the tournament after both players ended on 39 points.

Ronald Bulkan copped the third position with 37 points. He also had the honour of securing the Closest to the Rope prize while overseas-based A. Subhan won the prize for Closest to the Pin.

Joann Deo continued her impressive showing this season scoring 36 points to be declared the best female player while Christine Sukhram carted off two prizes, Closest to the Pin and Closest to the Rope.

Secretary of the Lusignan Golf Club, Bulkan, said he was extremely pleased with the turn out and declared that this was an indication that the game was  growing in popularity.

He also expressed gratitude to the European Union for sponsoring the tournament and paid tribute to Ambassador Heikens who is a staunch supporter of the Club.

According to Bulkan the Club welcomes new members and he urged corporate Guyana to get on board.
Ambassador Heikens and his wife Rita are ardent golfers and the Ambassador has indicated that the EU will sponsor another tournament in 2009.

Later in the evening the players were feted at Ambassador Heikens’ Residence at the presentation dinner.
Meanwhile, preparations are going apace for the Guyana Open Championships billed for early November at Lusignan.
The event is expected to attract the cream of the country’s golfers as well as participants from Canada, United States, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
