No action taken on Western Tigers-Flamingo brawl

Executives of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) are yet to make a decision after last Wednesday’s boxing match between players of the Western Tigers and Flamingo Football Clubs respectively, when the two sides clashed in a GFA/Banks DIH sponsored first division league game at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground.

The brawl erupted after Western Tigers Devon Millington apparently knocked over Flamingo’s Errol Squires while making a run on goal in the 60th minute before putting a well placed ball past Flamingo’s goal keeper Lennox Curt.

But the Flamingo player appealed to referee Steve Jacobs that Millington had allegedly punched the defender to the face while going on goal. They appealed for a free kick but instead the referee awarded a goal.

This story was even told by Flamingo’s coach Aubrey Marshall who said that after Millington had apparently committed the act, he returned to taunt the already hurt player from which the ensuing scuffle broke out.

The referee issued several red cards, but the administration at Thirst Park ground, where the game was held, turned off the lights at the venue, resulting in the referee having to abandon the match.
Contacted yesterday, GFA’s president Troy Mendonca stated that they are still awaiting a report from the referee before making any decision on the match.

The tournament, they said, will continue as normal but serious repercussions will be suffered by either of two teams when a decision is made over the brawl.
Millington in the meantime is till training along with the other short-listed local players who are vying for a chance to represent Guyana in the second round of the Digicel Caribbean Championships which is slated for November in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
