GABA First Division League…

By Rawle Toney

The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) first division league continued over the weekend at the Burnham Basketball Court with wins for Dyna’s Ravens and Nets. On Saturday, Ravens easily defeated Maccabees 73-63 in a game they completely dominated from jump ball. Every possession was hunted down by Ravens players forcing their opponents to make some easy turn overs which were capitalized on.

At half time the score was 39-23 in favour of Ravens. Maccabees relied heavily on point guard Hodyah Stewart who ended with 19 points while Joel Gary chipped in with 11.  For Ravens, their newly-acquired players, Kevin Evans and Marlon Chesney led the way with 12 and 11 points respectively while Ryan Gullen had eight.

Meanwhile, on Sunday evening the Nets continued their winning ways after beating Demerara Panthers 88-78 in closely-contested game.
The Nets, playing without primary scorers Tristan Tulloch and Fabian Johnson who have been suspended by the GABA for indiscipline, were forced to pull out all the stops against a young and energetic Panthers team.

Nonetheless they produced a complete team effort to remain unbeaten.
The Panthers played very well in the first half pressuring the Nets players every time they held the ball and scoring easy baskets but the Nets still held a slim lead at the end of the half, 33-31.
The second period saw an invigorated Nets unit who dug deep into their repertoire, chasing down every loose ball and forcing the Panthers to move away from their initial game plan. Despite some good runs by the Panthers, the Nets stayed focused and held on for the win.

Troy Ferdinand led all scorers with game-high 20 points while Llewellyn Dow supported with 14.
For the Panthers, Yannick December had 14 points while Olatunde Griffith and George Easton contributed with 12 and eight points respectively.

The tournament along with the Kevin Worrell/Lens Craft third-division league will continue at the same venue.
