A pork-knocker who allegedly stole a quantity of raw gold from a gold mining company was granted bail in the sum of $160,000 when he appeared before Magistrate Nyasha Williams-Hatmin at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Dameon Edwards of Grant Collins, Lower Pomeroon River, pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny when it was read to him.
It is alleged that between November 5 and 6, at Toparo Backdam, Essequibo, Edwards stole 19 pennyweights of raw gold, valued $107,000, property of Alfro Alphonso Mining Company.
However, Edwards’s lawyer stated that his client is a pork-knocker and the gold the police had found in his possession had no brand or mark on it indicating that it belonged to the mining company. He said that the gold belonged to Edwards. The defence attorney then applied for bail.
Meanwhile, the prosecution objected to the bail application on the grounds that at the time that the offence was committed, Edwards was an employee of the mining company and the raw gold was recovered in Edwards’s bag. They also stated that it was a serious offence and if Edwards was granted bail he may not return to court.
The magistrate subsequently granted bail in the sum of $160,000 and transferred the case to Court 1 for November 24.
