Final Salute

Former professional golf coach Basil Sukhram was laid to rest yesterday at the Good Hope Cemetery following tributes by relatives and golf colleagues at the Lusignan Golf Club and later at his residence in the East Coast Demerara village.

Players and caddies made an arch with their golf clubs in a salute following a brief viewing at the Lusignan Golf Course.

The 54-year-old Sukhram who died of a heart attack while playing at the LGC last Saturday, was described as a very knowledgeable golf player whose death will leave a void on the local circuit.

Sukhram had earlier in the week travelled to Berbice on route to Paramaribo to compete in the Suriname Open but the tournament was cancelled due to a strike by customs officers in the neighbouring republic.

The local contingent returned to Georgetown after learning of the cancellation and some of the players decided to compete in a match on Saturday at the LGC when Sukhram succumbed.

Among those playing tribute at a wake held in Sukhram’s honour on Tuesday evening were President of the Lusignan Golf Club Mel Sankies, Club captain Jerome Khan and secretary Ronald Bulkan.
