Alness labourer to stand trial for rape of girl 13

Magistrate Chandra Sohan, sitting at the Whim Magistrate’s Court, yesterday committed a labourer of Alness, Corentyne to stand trial at the next sitting at the Berbice High Court for the 2005 rape of a 13-year-old female.

It is alleged that between August 16 and 19, 2005 at Alness Delroy Leitch, 32, had carnal knowledge of the minor.

According to the facts of the case presented by Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Michael Grant, the child left her home at New Amsterdam to spend a week with her aunt at Alness. The defendant who lived in the same house allegedly committed the offence repeatedly.

The matter was reported to the Whim Police Station and the accused was arrested and charged.

The preliminary inquiry commenced on March 17, 2008.

The magistrate found that there was enough evidence to commit him to stand trial. Leitch who was represented by Senior Counsel Marcel Crawford was granted bail in the sum $100,000.
