In Japanese martial arts, the term senpai generally refers to the highest ranked student in a club who is not yet a black belt. They are expected to assist the sensei with younger or less experienced students.

The new dojo which is part of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) opened in March and now has over 40 members who meet every Sunday from 9am.

Last Saturday the dojo held its first fundraising activity in the form of a take-away lunch organized by parents Cheronica Abdool and Verna Rasheed with support from Imran Bacchus and Sons business enterprise.

Meanwhile, several less fortunate children were invited to spend the day with the karatekas.  A major feature of the event was  service to the community with meals being shared and gift tokens given out.
