– sponsors national super middleweight title fight
Guyana’s leading furniture and appliance store Courts has come on board the June 27 S and S Promotions boxing card entitled ‘The Final Execution’ by sponsoring the national super middleweight title fight between Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen and Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
At a simple ceremony held at Courts Guyana Main Street branch yesterday, Country Manager Lester Alvis presented the sponsorship cheque valued at $300,000 to promoter Stanford Solomon.
According to Alvis, Courts sees the sponsorship as part of their corporate responsibility as boxing plays an important role in the development of youths, with many of them using their skill in the sport for a better life.
He also noted that this is not their first partnership with the boxing fraternity since they have teamed-up with the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) in the past.
“Courts have always paid a part in sports and its development in Guyana and our sponsorship of this card is testimony to our commitment not only to boxing but to sports on a whole. Boxing is a great sport because of how it can change the lives of the less fortunate and if Courts can play a small role we would be grateful,” Alvis declared.
Meanwhile, President of the GBBC Peter Abdool lauded Courts for their continued support to the sport which he feels can bring much greatness to Guyana faster than many others.
Abdool said he sees the five-fight card as one which will be filled with lots of excitement since persons would get a chance to see two of Guyana’s brightest prospects for landing a world title in their division in Leon Moore and Lennox Allen.
Moore, he said, is a world class fighter who is out simply to settle a score with his friend Dexter Marques. He had given his national title to Marques after becoming the WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) champion.
Allen on the other, Abdool said, is one of the country’s youngest and flashiest boxers and the fight with Gilkes is also aimed at settling a score since the latter believes that Allen is a bit overrated.
However, none of these fighters would have gotten a chance to face each other without the help of corporate Guyana and he reiterated his gratitude to Courts.
