The Guyana Blind Cricket team which will participate in this year’s regional tournament yesterday received words of encouragement from Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee.
“I have no doubt that this team is going to do well at this tournament and, feeling certain that we can be proud of this team, I wish to congratulate the team in advance for their success,” Rohee said yesterday at the Malteenoes Sports Club building on Thomas Lands.
The Blind cricket team is preparing for the fourth regional tournament which will be held here later this month.
Rohee encouraged the players to play as a team adding that he takes a great interest in sport involving athletes who are differently-abled.
He said he planned to observe the sports’ development from a distance.
Meanwhile, former national player Roger Harper (brother of Mark Harper) donated a quantity of stumps to the GUYBCA.
The former West Indies coach said he wanted to assist in his own way by strongly supporting what he believed to be an outstanding group of cricket players.
He congratulated GUYBCA on what he saw as a good selection and a team with great opportunity to display their special skills.
The tournament launch is set for July 18 at the Umana Yana.
Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana will battle for the right to be called regional champions.
