Nation shocked at GDF ranks role in murder – PPP

The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says the nation is shocked at the murder of Dweive Kant Ramdass allegedly at the hands of ranks of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

In a press release the party said the allegation of the man’s murder at the hands of GDF officers is one of the most shameful pages in its history and in the country. It has shocked the nation.

The PPP believes that “this incident must inform the authorities to re-examine the training of ranks in the disciplined forces with an emphasis on moral education and the honour in serving the nation.” It said too citizens must be informed often of the powers and procedures of the various sections of the disciplined forces and measures to adopt in communities. This is necessary as there have been far too many reports of harassment of the public by traffic as well as other officers attached to the police force who stop persons for traffic offences.

Also, the party said there is need for greater participation of communities in oversight of the disciplined forces and as such the station management committees should be given greater scope.

At the same time, the PPP commends the public-spirited citizen who assisted in the apprehension of the perpetrators in Ramdass’s murder and it extended condolences to his relatives, friends and the Bartica community.
