PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – West Indies batting legend Gordon Greenidge has urged Caribbean countries to follow the example of development and unity set by Trinidad and Tobago.
Delivering the feature address at the Clarke Road United awards ceremony on Saturday night, Greenidge said the T&T team was an excellent illustration of togetherness, one that the West Indies team could learn much from.
“One thing for sure that many teams can copy is the team unity, that this T&T team has exihibited,” said Greenidge, whose 108 Tests between 1974 and 1991 yielded 7558 runs.
“When you see the West Indies team go out to play and you compare that to T&T, it is totally different. The T&T team unity is very good and we have to foster that among the islands.”
T&T have come to the fore in recent years, dominating the regional domestic and one-day competitions.
Last month, they grabbed international headlines when they played unbeaten to reach the final of the Twenty20 Champions League – the world club championship – before losing in the final to New South Wales.
Greenidge, a former chairman of West Indies selectors, said the T&T Cricket Board’s development model had played a huge role in the country’s success.
“The development plan used by the Trinidad Board is very good and this should be used throughout the region as a blueprint to developing our young cricketers,” he pointed out.
He also lauded the captaincy of Daren Ganga who has led the team successfully over the last few years.
